Our story

Rooted in love.
Growing in hope.

Some legacies are inherited. Others are given through love.

Walker’s Place was born from love, loss, faith, and the belief that even in life's hardest seasons, hope can still take root.

In 2002, I lost my little brother and my mother to suicide, just three months apart. In 2021, I experienced the heartbreaking loss of my son. These are losses that have forever changed my life and the way I see the world.

Addiction has also run rampant throughout my family, including my own personal struggles with it. I know firsthand that addiction does not affect only one person. Its reach can extend into families, relationships, and generations, leaving behind pain that is often carried silently.

I share this part of my story not because it defines me, but because it is part of what has shaped my purpose. I know that behind every struggle is a human being worthy of compassion, and behind every child affected by addiction is a young life deserving of love, safety, and the opportunity to grow.

I cannot change the losses my family has endured or rewrite the difficult chapters of our story. But I can choose to honor the people I love by turning my pain into something that serves others.

The Man Behind the Walker Name

My stepfather taught me to love the outdoors. Through him, I discovered the peace, freedom, and quiet strength that nature can offer when life feels heavy.

After nearly twenty years in Tennessee, that love eventually helped lead me home to my roots in Mississippi. Coming home meant more than returning to a place on the map. It meant reconnecting with the land, the memories, and the values that helped shape who I am.

Although my stepfather was not my biological father, he showed me a father's love that went far beyond blood. Through him, and through my own father, I came to understand something of God's love as a Father: a love that welcomes, guides, teaches, and gives us reasons to keep going.

That is why I choose to honor the Walker name. Not simply because it is a family name, but because it represents a legacy of love that I want to pass forward to children who need someone to believe in them.

Why the Outdoors?

The outdoors has been one of the gifts passed down to me, and I want to pass that gift on. A fishing line cast into quiet water. A trail waiting to be explored. The discovery of wildlife, the satisfaction of learning a new skill, or the simple freedom of spending a day outside.

These moments may seem small, but they can open doors to healthy interests, confidence, connection, and joy.

Our vision is to create safe, welcoming outdoor experiences for children whose parents are or have been affected by addiction. We want children to have caring adults around them, positive experiences to look forward to, and opportunities to discover their own strengths.

We know that an outdoor experience cannot erase trauma or solve addiction. But we believe that supportive relationships, healthy activities, and a sense of belonging can become meaningful parts of a child's journey.

Our Faith: Keep Casting

Faith is the foundation of Walker’s Place. It reminds us that love is an action, that hope can survive difficult seasons, and that we are called to care for one another.

KEEP CASTING.

To us, keeping casting means never giving up on a child, never deciding that someone's future is already written, and never allowing hardship to convince us that hope is gone.

Anyone who has spent time fishing understands that you cast your line without knowing exactly what will happen. You may wait. You may face disappointment. You may have to try again. But you keep casting.

We believe the same spirit belongs in life. We keep showing up. We keep loving. We keep praying. We keep offering opportunities. And we keep believing that tomorrow can hold something good.

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”1 Peter 5:7, King James Version

This scripture reminds us that we do not have to carry every burden alone. We can bring our grief, our worries, and our struggles to God while continuing to care for the people around us.

A Love Greater Than Loss

The song “The Greatest Love of All,” made famous by Whitney Houston, reflects a message that resonates with the heart of Walker’s Place: the importance of recognizing the worth within every person and nurturing the promise that lives within each child.

For us, love is not just something we remember. It is something we practice. It is the meal shared, the hand extended, the fishing trip offered, the child encouraged, and the person reminded that they matter.

The greatest tribute we can offer the people who helped shape our lives is to carry their love forward.

Our Mission and Our Promise

Walker’s Place is dedicated to providing children affected by parental addiction with positive outdoor experiences, supportive relationships, and opportunities to build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.

We are beginning in Smith and Simpson counties, Mississippi, with a vision to grow through community partnerships, volunteers, and people who believe that every child deserves a chance to thrive.

We may not be able to rewrite the past. We cannot promise a life without hardship. But we can help create moments of safety, joy, connection, and hope.

We can honor those we have lost by showing up for those who are still here. We can honor the Walker name by extending the love it represents to children who need it.

Keep casting love. Keep casting hope. Keep casting, even when the waters are rough.

Walker’s Place: Rooted in love. Growing in hope. Faithfully casting toward a brighter future.
